Double-click a Word file. Edit it in Google Docs.

No Microsoft 365 subscription. No uploading by hand. Just double-click.

Off2Goo is a Windows program that sends any Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file to your own Google Drive and opens it in Docs, Sheets, or Slides, ready to edit.

What you’re buying

Off2Goo itself, for one Windows PC. One payment of $4.99, no subscription. You don’t need Microsoft 365 or a paid Google plan, because Docs, Sheets, and Slides are free.

Set up in five minutes

  1. 1

    Pay $4.99.

This is a one-time purchase. When the payment goes through, you download Off2Goo.zip. The same link is emailed to you, so you can download it again later.

  2. 2

    Run Off2Goo.exe.

Unzip the download and open Off2Goo.exe. A setup window appears. No administrator password needed.

  3. 3

    Sign in with Google.

Setup opens your browser. Use the account where you want your files. Off2Goo remembers the sign-in on this PC.

  4. 4

    Pick Off2Goo when Windows asks.

Setup walks you through Word, Excel, macro-enabled Excel, and PowerPoint. Each time, choose Off2Goo and check “Always.”

  5. 5

    Double-click any Office file.

Off2Goo uploads it to a folder named Off2Goo in your Google Drive, then opens it in your browser: Google Docs for Word, Google Sheets for Excel, and Google Slides for PowerPoint.

What happens to your files

Every file goes into a folder named Off2Goo in your Google Drive. It counts toward your Drive storage.

  • .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx files stay in their original Office format. Google opens them for editing as they are.
  • Older files (.doc, .xls, .ppt) and macro-enabled files are converted to a Google Doc, Sheet, or Slides file so the editor can open them.
  • Also supported: .dot, .xlt, .pot, .odt, .ods, and .odp.

It’s your file, in your Drive

The uploaded file is a normal Google Drive file. Open it, edit it, share it, or delete it with Google’s standard tools. To get a copy back on your PC, use File > Download in Docs, Sheets, or Slides, or right-click the file in Drive and choose Download. You can do this at any time.

Opening the same file again

The first double-click uploads the file. Double-click the same file again and Off2Goo opens the copy already in Drive instead of uploading it again. Off2Goo doesn’t copy your Google edits back to the file on your PC, and changes you make in desktop Word, Excel, or PowerPoint after the first upload aren’t sent to Drive. To bring your edits back to your PC, download the file from Google using File > Download.

What you need

  • A Windows PC
  • A Google account
  • A web browser
  • An internet connection when you open a file, because Off2Goo uploads it first

Microsoft makes Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Google makes Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Those companies set the rules for their own apps. Off2Goo is an independent program that connects a double-click on your PC to the file in your Drive.
